Sharon worked in nursing for nine years before deciding to train as an osteopath. She received her BSC (Hons) in Osteopathy in 1992 and worked as a Registered Osteopath for 17 years. Osteopathy has similarities to physiotherapy and chiropractic in that there is a focus on improving movement in all joints and soft tissues. The aim is to improve their function and therefore decrease pain and discomfort. Overall posture is also improved.
Sharon started Pilates in 1996. She had a prolapsed disc a few years earlier and felt fluctuating but constant pain for almost five years. A factor in developing the injury was a long term postural problem and she found that she could use Pilates to address both these things. In 1996 Sharon trained at the Edinburgh Pilates Centre for 14 months. At the time this was the only studio in Scotland and few people had even heard of Pilates. There were no mat classes in existence at the time, and she had no one to refer to, so she started her own. Sharon's been teaching Pilates ever since.
Sharon has always continued to develop her skills in nursing, osteopathy and Pilates. "I read and study anatomy, physiology and different forms of movement, and attend various classes which always enhance my teaching. I am particularly interested in Feldenkrais and yoga."
You move on to the other levels when you feel you are ready. There is no pressure to do more and you can remain at whatever level you feel comfortable with for as long as you like.
Classes are kept to a maximum of 12 people.
